El Paso’s Premier Multisport Event Celebrates Fifth Anniversary
Excitement is in the air as aspiring and experienced athletes eagerly prepare for El Paso’s premier multi-sport event, Eagle in the Sun Triathlon, taking place on Sunday, August 31.
Presented by Race El Paso, the race will kick off with a 400-yard swim in the Socorro Independent School District Aquatic Center. From there, participants will race along a mostly-flat 12-mile loop and finish with a 5K run ending in the Student Activities Complex.
“Eagle in the Sun is the first race I ever produced,” said Race Director Gabriela Gallegos. “I believed that El Paso deserved a race of this level and am thrilled with how it has grown over the years.”
Debuting in 2010, this year will mark Eagle in the Sun Triathlon’s 5th anniversary. For the athletes and sponsors who have been there since the beginning – including Solar Smart Living, Crazy Cat Cyclery, Sierra Providence Health Network, and Texas Tech Health Sciences Center – the race will be particularly significant.
“The 5th anniversary is an incredible milestone,” said Gallegos, “we are looking forward to celebrating with the hundreds of athletes, sponsors, and spectators on race day.”
The 2014 Eagle in the Sun Triathlon will also welcome participants of the USA Triathlon 2014 Rocky Mountain Region Youth and Junior Talent ID Series, a 7-race series designed to identify young talent for the Olympic pipeline.
“We are honored to be chosen for the series and eager to continue showing the world that El Paso is an ideal destination for training and racing,” said Gallegos.
In addition to the race, participants and spectators will have the chance to enjoy an interactive Expo featuring local businesses such as Floriography, Spa 915, Hoist Rapid Rehydration, Apex by Sunglass Hut, El Paso Photo Ops, and more.
Eagle in the Sun Triathlon is one of four races currently produced by Race El Paso. Other races include Mighty Mujer Triathlon (April), Mission Valley Duathlon (May), and Flying Horse Half Marathon & 5K (October). Plans for additional events are also in the works including the Workplace Race, launching this year as part of the Flying Horse Half Marathon & 5K, and a youth splash and dash that will take place July 2015.
